Serving and Being Served: A Volunteer’s Experience at Hospital Socorro de lo Alto

In 2025, I had the opportunity to volunteer photography for Hospital Socorro de lo Alto in Sula and Emerald Coast Missions, a dental mission within the hospital. The hospital and dental teams serve the area and positively impact many people.

I was impressed with the high quality, caring and compassion of the medical team not only as a volunteer, but also as a patient of the clinic when I became dehydrated. When I went to the clinic, Dr. Alvarado and the nurse’s provided treatment and checked in on how I was doing while I finished out the week of volunteer photography.

They, along with all the other physicians, medical professionals and support staff, work together to ensure each patient has the care needed. People come from across the area, even hours away for medical treatment. The hospital also has multiple weeks per year for medical treatment and surgeries provided by physicians and surgeons from within Honduras and other countries including the United States.

Volunteering with Hospital Socorro de lo Alto and being a patient was unforgettable. I encourage you to learn about this medical mission and support their efforts.
